Lazy holiday weekend

This is the most relaxed holiday weekend I've had in a long time. The secret, it appears, is not travelling. Now, I love my family (and my in-laws) dearly, but man was it nice to just hang out at home in sweats. Come to think of it, I didn't even leave the house once on Thursday or Friday. Now that's the height of laziness!

Not leaving the house was not the plan originally, of course, but Mr. Jane was sick Thursday and Friday, so we spent those days just hanging out on the couch, watching football and playing games. We rarely spend such concentrated time together at home, so it was nice to reconnect with him. However, we both started getting stir-crazy last night, so we made sure to go out and run errands earlier today and we have plans to go out tonight (mmm, a meal other than turkey! can't wait!).

As you can see, my plans to spend a long weekend away from the computer lasted exactly two days. Realizing that my cell phone plan is expiring soon drove me to the computer this afternoon, to research plans and phones. If I was a "normal" person, I'd probably just pick a plan and go with it, but no, I have to look at all the technical details, scrutinize the coverage areas, and of course look at all the geeky phone features! So this is turning out to be quite the project. But hey, it sure beats grading and prepping lectures!

Don't worry, you're not alone. We noticed a new verizon store had opened in our neighborhood, and we excitedly went in to see all the new phones. We didn't get anything, of course, but we do love ourselves the verizon wireless store.

My advice: we recently switched to Cingular, and while the phone is cute and the service is super-much-politer, we're missing the Verizon robust signal. Lots more dropped calls, crappy reception. I had no idea it would be this bad. And we're locked in for 2 years.

Hopefully it will pay off when the networks improve and we get to use our GSM phones in Europe.... but who knows, we might switch back as soon as we can.

Choose carefully!

glad you had a relaxing weekend. I'm agreed that staying home is much better than traveling.

I shopped around for a LONG time before I got my phone and plan. When my contract was up, I looked around and found that there was nothing out there that worked better for me. My limitation is that it needs to work in rural and remote areas (hey, I'm an astronomer!), and it is hard to find information about how the networks perform there. The sales people are not much help. They keep trying to entice me to a new phone and new plan, but when I'm out with people in my remote spots, often it is only my (old) phone that works!

I do hope you find the new cell phone plan; they are such a headache to navigate. Just wanted to say your post made me ridiculously homesick for Thanksgiving with my American family. No such four day holiday here in the UK...and you really NEED it this time of year.

Wow, thanks for all the cell phone advice! I think we've found a plan that we like, and tonight we went to the store to check out the phones---ay caramba, I like two phones and I don't know which one to choose! So I'm going to mull it over for a few more days before officially making the switch. Coverage is the key thing, since my school seems to be in a weird signal zone, but beyond that I'm just looking forward to *not* having a 2-year contract anymore.

Inky Circus, I can send you some leftover turkey if you'd like....it's still hanging around our refrigerator! :)
