Students will break your heart if you let them

Today I found out that one of my favorite students is transferring.

This saddens me a great deal. This student is really talented, extremely smart, and very creative. Her final project for my class was beautifully designed, very polished, just all-around excellent. She was the one who answered the hardest questions in class, who always was ready with the key insights, who just loved the whole learning process and loved feeling challenged (and meeting those challenges). She's one of our up-and-coming superstars. And she's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

When you have students like that, it's hard not to get attached. I wish she wouldn't leave, but I wish her all the best. She'll still be a superstar......it'll just be somewhere else.

Always tough when the good ones leave. They generally graduate and leave eventually so prepare yourself. On the up side, sometimes they come back later and say thank you. Not as often as we'd like but often enough to sometimes give you the boost you need.

I was going to say that same thing: eventually they all leave. It's like parenting -- always a process of letting go ...

yes, it is always hard -- but I also hope you've let her know how good she is, and have told her the lovely things you've written here about her. (Given how thoughtfully you write about your work and what women face in academics and your field... I assume you do this? But I continually learn as I teach that people in classes need to hear what they do well, and how it is that they do it well -- especially the women, especially the women.)

Thanks for your writing. You help me get through some of the harder days...
