My wish list

* I wish that this is-it-gonna-be-a-migraine-or-is-it-gonna-go-away headache would just go away already.

* I wish I hadn't promised Mr. Jane that I would wean myself off of caffeine. (see #1)

* I wish that the students who so clearly and so desperately need help would just come and see me already. Short of cornering them in the hallway after class, I'm not sure what else I can do. (I know, I know, there's only so much I should do, but I hate to see students fail because they don't get help, for whatever reason.)

* I wish my colleague, who just learned how to delegate, would stop trying to delegate so much to me!

* I wish for two consecutive non-work days this weekend. (And I think I can actually pull this off!)

* I wish I had a Clue Stick. I could really use one around here.

* I wish every day could be Caramel Mocha Day! (although given #2, that could be problematic.....) But only from the new local coffee shop....

The head-ache comes from caffeine wthdrawal. Should be over after a few hours and not come back.

I've been thinking about you lately though I haven't been commenting. So I'm sending good thoughts your way for the headache, advising, the phone messages ordeal, delegating colleagues... Is it any wonder you have headaches? :)

When I get caffeine headaches, I drink coffee or soda (because I'm weak!), so I hope yours goes away quickly.

Why bother with weaning? It's a losing battle, and as long as you only have about a cup a day, really, it's not doing anyone any harm. (If I had it in me, I'd look for a link, but really, one cup of coffee isn't hurting anyone!)

I'm a big feminist, but doesn't decaf mean that #2 & #7 can coexist? (I know the phrasing is irrational, in light of your last post, I felt obligated.)

Ha ha, Scooter, very funny! :) Yes, thank god for decaf.

Ianqui, there's some debate--er, discussion--going on as to whether my sensitivity to caffeine is exacerbating certain other health problems. So yeah, just one cup is not bad, but the speculation is that just one cup may be bad for me. We'll see. But this whole weaning thing sucks!

anon, any tips for getting through the withdrawal without wanting to kill myself? ;)

Katie, thanks for the kind thoughts! I usually drink caffeine to make headaches go away, too. Now I'll have to find another remedy, maybe one not quite as drastic as quitting my job (hee hee). Sigh.

If you do get through your weaning without killing yourself, please share your strategy! I have all sorts of ideas on how other people should quit smoking, but, surprisingly, none on how I myself should reduce the caffeine.

Hi Jane,
I have been trying to quit coffee for YEARS-- maybe like me you are really sensitive to it? If I drink coffee after 1pm in the afternoon, I can't sleep well that night. At one point I was drinking two double espressos a day and having serious caffeine ups-and-downs. I weaned down to regular coffee and that was better, but if I went somewhere were there was no coffee (like camping) my entire day was ruined because I was unable to think all day and got really cranky. So... at last, I switched to tea. Now I drink 2 teas a day and the caffeine release is much slower and steadier and I am happier. So I don't have any advice about getting off caffeine completely, but you could try weaning to tea!

Hi Jane:
I have another comment for you about caffeine... I successfully quit caffeine about a year ago. My husband had given it up a couple of years earlier, so we were making separate coffee for a long time. To get off of it, I started by drinking half-caf coffee at home for a long time, then kept decreasing the amount of regular coffee until I was drinking decaf. I never had a caffeine headache, but was afraid for the first day I was completely without. (nothing bad happened) How much regular coffee do you drink now? I would definitely make it gradual rather than cold turkey, whatever your daily intake is now. I can tell you that it is GREAT not to HAVE to have a cup of coffee in the morning now. I also don't have that complete starvation, shaky feeling before lunch after drinking coffee all morning. I do occasionally have half-caf coffee drinks when I need some extra energy (like for a long drive or something), but I am quite happy to be off that addiction! To everyone who thinks it's impossible- it isn't! I am living proof!

Kjerstin, I'm basically doing what adenostoma's suggested. I'm down to one half-caf cup a day right now, and am planning on cutting this down a bit again tomorrow now that the low-grade caffeine headache that I've had for three straight days has finally subsided. I'll keep you posted and let you know if it works!

Dr. Shellie, I am super-sensitive to caffeine too. It doesn't keep me up at night, but if I have *any* caffeine one day then I *need* to have it the next day. And this is true even if I'm only drinking green tea. It's kind of frightening, and I'm guessing it's not a good thing to be so addicted to such a small amount. Hence, the promise to Mr. Jane that I would wean myself off of it for good.
