Happy (Inter)National De-Lurking Week!

Update: I forgot to attribute the image in the original post. Doh! The image is from Paper Napkin.

Yes, apparently it's that time of year again! So, if you're a lurker, if you've never commented, now's your chance! You don't have to say anything brilliant (it's not like there's a lot of brilliance going on in these postings anyway, ha ha!), just say hello. Or, if you're really stuck for something to say, here are some ideas (which I'm probably shamelessly stealing from others):

Name a good book/movie you've seen lately.
What's your favorite band/CD/song?
Where's the coolest place you've ever been on vacation?

Looking forward to meeting you!

Coolest vacation? Two-week raft trip on the Colorado River.

I'm mainly a lurker here, although I know I've left a few comments over the last year ....

yup yup yup, de-lurking.

I just saw a movie on video that blew me away called Shattered Glass; wonderfully acted by some very young actors.

I've made a few comments now and then, but not all the time.

I'm a female stats grad student, and I really enjoy your blog. I stop by a few times a week.

I'm pretty sure I've commented here before, but here's an official de-lurk. ;)

I really enjoy your blog: it gives me perspective on what it is like to be a female prof. I'm finishing my MA and will hopefully be starting PhD work in the fall. I just saw the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and thought it was pretty good!

I'm not a lurker, but I found this post amusing and felt it was a call to action. You title gave me the concept of (entirely meaninglessly) outdoing you, so you can see my post about this here.

not really delurking, but here I am anyway. Most recent good movie was Good Night and Good Luck about Murrow's reporting of McCarthy (with none too subtle lessons for today), ss said over at profgrrl's, my most recent good read was "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich, and I haven't bought any new music in a long time, but I am still loving Sarah McLachlan's Afterglow. So there you go, a totally fluffy comment.

I love to listen to old Louis Jordan tunes.

Wow! Welcome, everyone! Those of you who've left links to blogs, I'm on my way over to check them out....

and thanks for the movie/book/music suggestions! I'll have to check those out!

Kurt, I'm glad you find the blogroll useful! I wish I could say more about my subfield, but I fear it would out me very quickly. But I will say it's a really neat subfield with lots of opportunities for interdisciplinary work.

Hi Jane,

I really enjoy your blog. I even put a link to it in my blogroll since a lot of teachers read mine. They need to know that are women who compute and you provide a great role model!

Officially unlurking, I would say I check your blog once or twice a week and am always happy when you get a mention in InsideHigherEd. Favourite book recently read is Philip Jose Farmer's classic To Your Scattered Bodies Go. Movie-wise, with 10- and 12 year old boys, let's just say it's been a while since I've seen something adult. The recent Harry Potter movie is the best of the bunch so far, King Kong coulda been a classic but was too bloated.

Hey, I guess I'm a lurker. I read your blog and so far have really enjoyed it. As a grad student I get a glimpse of what I'm hoping for in the future, an academic position in a similiar field. I just finished reading the Chronicles of Narnia, I wanted to see the film but not before reading the books. I don't know why as a kid I didn't get into them but I have to say the series was great. A quick and fun read, who doesn't wish sometimes for a majestic lion to come their aid when in need?
cheers-
B

de-lurking....

For a book, I absolutely, whole-heartedly recommend 1491.

And as a higher-ed staff type, I'm fascinated by the faculty perspective. As a woman in a semi-tech field, I appreciate what you're doing. Keep up the good work!

I don't think I commented here yet. Hi.

Thanks for the comments, everyone who's commented since my last "thanks for the comments" comment! :) I'm so excited that I have all of these new books (and blogs) to add to my "to-read" list--thanks for the suggestions! And thanks again for your kind words. It means a lot to me that there are people out there who enjoy reading what I'm writing. :)

Hi,
I'm lurking around your site quite a lot (every time I get stuck with my writing), so here are a few words about me.
I'm a grad student in biology in far away Israel. I'm wrapping it up now, trying to get some papers publish so I can fnd a postdoc abroad (the only option if I want a job in academia). I'm a mother to two kids, which makes life both more interesting and more complicated..
Haven't seen movies latly, but realy liked the two disks of "The Apples", an Israeli Jazz-electronic music group.
Thanks for your frank and interesting posts!

Hi. I'm a bit late de-lurking. I'm a prof in the humanities. My husband has a PhD in CS but is not a prof.

I hope you've submitted your teaching posts to the next teaching carnival. I think they're great, and relevant to other fields.

coolest vacation: Laos

I don't think that I'm really lurking -- but then again...

I'm David and my interest is communication (mass media). I'm taking a year-long trip and testing the utility of seven media channels: blog; newspaper column; online forum; map room; photo gallery; podcasts; and radio.

If the idea of getting your message out there using more of these options, please take a look -- and leave a comment, if you aren't a lurker...
