I'll do a separate post on the guidelines I give to my students, and how I tailor them depending on depth of work, timeline, whether they're more or less "intellectually mature", etc.

Anon, you hit on a great point---that, with the proper feedback, writing the thesis (or grant proposals) can be very useful in learning how to write intros, etc. I'm glad your advisor is evolving. :)Janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17082496114155799356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9848115.post-9076834002543298552007-02-11T12:09:00.000-06:002007-02-11T12:09:00.000-06:00My advisor seems to have evolved regarding how he ...My advisor seems to have evolved regarding how he teaches his students how to write. For papers (in CS, though not in Jane's area as far as I can figure out), since we're often under deadline pressure, he likes us to write the technical core, and then he writes the introduction.

Of course, that approach is somewhat problematic when we start writing our own papers and grant proposals. I think he's noticed that this sort of becomes a problem.

I think that he's started to care more about writing by caring a bit more about what goes into our theses. He didn't care at all before. Now he cares a bit. Actually I spent almost a year between starting my thesis and finishing it, with various distractions throughout.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9848115.post-58443738151980367272007-02-10T05:31:00.000-06:002007-02-10T05:31:00.000-06:00Wondeful post Jane! However, I want to ask please i...Wondeful post Jane!
However, I want to ask please if you can explian more this pargraph by giving us an example
(The format is basically the structure of a common paper in my field---abstract, intro/motivation, related work, algorithm, etc. But I also give them guidelines as to what sort of material to include in each section, what voice to use, etc.).

I mean if you can provide us with the basic template you use and give an example of the voice of each section of the paper this will be great!

Thanks
IrisAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
